Mike MMMay 27, Had my truck at multiple shops can not find problem. Check for exhaust streaking from where the manifold bolts to the head at each port. The exhaust manifold is actually 3 sections, so check each main slip joint for any streaking.Toshiba paper size chart
Egr piping also goes along the back behind the head and may be leaking, that's a hard area to see. HeavydMay 27, Heavyd Thanks this. Jun 3, Found leak in egr pipe around back of engine that did not solve the problem any other ideas?
Mike MMJun 3, Does this have a "Y" pipe with exhaust stacks up the sides?Sulphur 30 for piles
Check for holes on the top of the piping that can't be seen from underneath. HeavydJun 3, Jun 4, Can exhaust manifold be leaking if no black streaks?
Mike MMJun 4, That is possible, but rare.

My dock mate has a 06 Meridian with hp Cummins, less than hours. The port engine started overheating on him while cruising. He says he caught it before the alarms went off and shut it down.
I'm thinking he shredded an impeller and told him pick up a couple of new ones and I'll help him install them over the weekend. He called today from the marina and said he is leaking traces of what appears to be diesel into the water from the underwater exhaust. He further says when he activates the the engine electronics he notices more of a sheen from the exhaust.
Is it possible for diesel to leak from a non-running engine into the exhaust on this engine?4th gen Cummins boost leak whistle. 2012 Ram
How would diesel pass thru the stack being heavier than water? I want to help him out and trace down the cooling issue but I don't want to cause a mess in the marina if I fire up that engine and lay down a big slick. I went down and looked at the exhaust today, at the exhaust there was a postcard size sheen until I jumped on the swim platform, then it grew to the size of a sheet of paper. Thanks for any opinions.
Is the turbo raw water cooled in any way on this setup? I could see that being a possibility in a minor overheat.
I didn't have time to or tools to really check it out today other that check the engine oil and coolant which looked ok. Didn't check the trans though.
Does sound like it's in the exhaust system and bouncing on the swim platform changed the level of the water in there and allowed more 'oil' to escape. Like brucie said, one of the coolers. Charlie There is much to be said, in a world like ours, for taking the world as you find it and fishing with a worm.
End plates and seals are usually needed. Any rust on the weep hole means a total rebuild. How would you check the fuel cooler short of removal and pressure test?
Any way of distinguishing oil from diesel slick visually? Vic makes a good point about these being very young engines.
This sheen isnt from long idling is it??? I'm rounding up parts today for his boat and mine, probably going to go down to the marina tomorrow.
Agree totally on the service, sometimes people are too cheap for their own good. He just wanted to replace the impeller on the one engine. I pretty much told him if he wanted my help he needed to do both engines and the genset or he could hire someone.Nhl 20 best settings
Should be obvious. Look for signs of leaks or water in oil or trans then go for a run. Those are great engines but cant be neglected. I would suggest a call to Tony Athens who is the local B motor guru. IIRC he is not a fan of those fuel coolers which can be problematic. His site has good info on how to go though the aftercoolers correctly. He also has a replacement pump for those POS Sherwoods.
One of the first thing I did on my c's was to replace the water pump with the ones Tony sells. I also cleaned my aftercoolers per his method. He is a font of information and is great to deal with.We have eliminated the belts and the pulleys as the cause. All of the hose clamps have been checked and we do not have an air leak.
We have noticed black soot around 3 of the exhaust ports. Has anyone had experience with an exhaust leak making this noise? We were warned by Cummins years ago that this engine can have possible exhaust leaks.
Thanks for your help. Marta and Scott 07 Allure It did not make a screaming noise. It was, rather, like a ticking. Each time the cylinder with the leak fired we would hear the leak as a psst.
At idle of RPM that would be per minute or 5 per second. That made each psst sound like a tick. Of course that doesn't mean a leak cannot sound as your describe. The evidence of carbon around the exhaust manifold is unmistakable. You have leaks. See you Thursday. 2010-18 6.7L Dodge Cummins - Exhaust Kits - Diesel Power Products
He suggested the opening and closing action could explain the intermittant 'puffs' of exhaust i get after driving for awhile. I'm taking the truck back to the dealer. Problem is not solved. After they replaced the exhaust manifold gasket, the truck ran fine for the first miles. When i stopped at the rest stop and turned the truck off, i could smell what i would describe as a large plume of exhaust, as if the gases were released all at once.
Then when i cranked back up and got rolling, the exhaust smell seemed to be gone. I'm thinking that exhaust is building somewhere in the engine and is being released slowly and intermittently. Any more ideas folks???

If only one hole that's your cylinder problem. Be sure it's oil and not fuel also. Sep 6, 3. Take it back. The shop should fix if its not your turbo. Unless you had them replace turbo, then they should fix that too.
